Distance learning is a fast-growing option in education. Students are opting now more than ever to complete all required coursework online, whether to earn an associate degree, bachelor degree or master degree. Students of aviation have more options now than ever as well.

One of the main reasons that online learning is becoming more common is because there are now more schools offering online programs. Online programs can be cheaper than traditional campus programs, so schools can cut costs by having fewer students on campus but enrolling more people to pay tuition. Plus, offering distance learning programs can prove an effective marketing tool for schools that need to attract more applicants. As schools offer more programs online, there will be more students attracted to these programs.

Convenience

Arguably the primary reason for the growth of online schooling is the extraordinary convenience of earning a degree online. Nowadays, everyone is aware of the benefits of earning a college degree. It can improve employment prospects and help people earn significantly more money over the course of a lifetime, so it is a dream of many. Only a few decades ago only the financially and academically elite could achieve the dream of a college degree, but partly because of the online expansion, more and more students nowadays are completing college educations.

The online revolution also opened up the possibility of a college degree to nontraditional students. Individuals who did not earn college degrees right after graduating from high school, who are now working full-time jobs and possibly supporting families, have the option of attending school, when most used to believe it impossible. Distance learning students can complete all required coursework online, meaning they do not have to physically travel to a campus or work their schedules around classes. Plus, those who do not live near a college do not have to relocate to attend school.

Respectability

When online learning first emerged, many employers, educators, and students were wary of degrees that did not require students to attend campus in-person because they lacked opportunities to discuss what students were learning, and tended to focus almost entirely on reading and writing. However, as more and more students have chosen online options, it has become a more mainstream and acceptable way to complete one’s education. Nowadays, employers often do not see a degree earned online as being any different from a degree earned in a traditional school format.
